Well looky looky who is back with new music. They're gearing up for the release of their new album "New Again" hitting stores on June 2nd, and going on a summer tour with former "Best Music" band Anberlin opening for them. (The emo kid in me is screaming I WANT TO GO!)
I don't think this is their strongest radio song they've released, but it's quickly climbing the charts.

Issue #8- Cage the Elephant- "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked"
I'm still not sure on this one.
Later on, I could look back on this song and say "Those hipster douchebags, why did I ever like this song??" Or I could look back and go "yeah. I'm glad I liked it!"
This song had to grow on me a bit... and I'm still not 100% sold on it... but I'm throwing it on here anyway because YOU may like it.
The band is called Cage The Elephant, and looking at the music video, these guys look like the type of hipster I love to hate. The song has been climbing the charts rather quickly... and probably will have the same fate as Flobots... people love it for a while... then go "meh" and we never hear from them again. We shall see.
So... straight outta Kentucky... today's "Best Music" is from Cage The Elephant, and their song "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked"

Issue #7- Black Lab- Ghost in Your Mind
Anyone remember this band?
They had one major label album, released back in 1997 called "Your Body Above Me," which spawned the rock hits "Wash it Away" and "Time Ago." Then they disappeared.
What happened in the next 7 or so years is a tale of an artist saying "screw it" to major record labels.
The band got caught up in their record label (Geffen Records) getting swallowed by a bigger label. The bigger label just sat on the band, not supporting them on a new album, but not letting them out of their contract. Lead singer Paul Durham said he is probably the only person ever to move to L.A. to get OUT of a record deal. The band broke free and disbanded. Durham kept the name and found some new people, and seemed set for a comeback. They released a song "Learn to Crawl" on the Spiderman Soundtrack, and were signed to Epic Records. Nothing happened. An album was ready to go. Nothing happened. Another fight with a record label... another breakaway. Finally, Durham decided to release the music on his own, and www.blacklabworld.com was born.
Since then, the band has released two full-length albums a cover album (under the name Mirror Ball Associates), a techo album, a side project (under the name Cake or Death) and just released a 5 song EP from ANOTHER side project. Oh yeah, and they've made three music videos on their own too. Not too shabby at all. They're probably the best unsigned band in America right now.
Your "Best Music" for today: from their latest album "Passion Leaves a Trace," it's Black Lab and "Ghost in Your Mind"

Issue #6- James Morrison & Nelly Furtado- "Broken Strings"
I like the set-up of this one... too bad it hasn't turned it into a bigger hit...
James Morrison (No... not JIM Morrison)... British singer/songwriter... trying to make it big in the US. Team him up with Nelly Furtado, who has had... well... quite a few big hits.
Hopefully this will open up the door for him in the US to bigger and better things.
For today, your "Best Music"... James Morrison and Nelly Furtado doing "Broken Strings"

Issue #5- Friday Flashback!
When I started this blog... I thought "I need something cheesy and cliche, like a 'Way Back Wednesday' or a 'Throwback Thursday'" and eventually settled on 'Flashback Friday.' Real frickin' clever eh?
The inaugural Flashback Friday comes from the Modern Rock charts of 1997-98. They were one-hit (if you can even call them that) wonders from Britain that wrote a catchy song about... well... cocaine. And cleverly titled it "Sugar Cane." It peaked at #20 on the charts, but was catchy enough to stick around on my iPod.
So from their debut album "The Daddy of Them All," your Flashback Friday is "Sugar Cane" by the Space Monkeys.

Issue #4- Anberlin- Feel Good Drag
Another song today that isn't brand spanking new. In fact, this one dates back to 2005 originally. What's more amazing is that this song is the #1 Modern Rock song in the country, and many people have never heard it.
The band is Anberlin. They've released their 4th album "New Surrender" and have taken the lead single "The Feel Good Drag" to #1. What's most amazing about that? The fact that A.) The song FIRST appeared on their sophomore album "Never Take Friendship Personal" or that B.) The song took a record 29 weeks to reach #1? (Think about that. 26 weeks = 1 half of a year!) Not too shabby at all.
So, to introduce a #1 song you may never have heard of... today's "Best Music"-
Anberlin- "Feel Good Drag"
OH. And PS- Universal Music Group... a big ol' middle finger for not letting people embed your artist's music videos. You actually have to click the link today to check it out:

Issue #3- The Gaslight Anthem- "The '59 Sound"
OK. Today's "Best Music" is not BRAND new. This song has been out for a little bit, and did OK for itself on the charts. And honestly, anything else I've heard from this band hasn't impressed me all that much.
Hailing from New Jersey, their sophomore album, "The '59 Sound" is in stores now. The title track was the first single... check it out!

Issue #2- Ryan Star- "Last Train Home"
Ryan Star has already had an interesting music career. You might know his name already, first as the lead singer of a band called "Stage", then as a contestant on Rockstar: Supernova. Since then, he's toiled in the studio working on his new album "14:59" hitting stores June 6th. This is the first single off the album:

Issue #1- Better Than Ezra- "Absolutely Still"
OK, ok. So my first post here on TBMYNH is going to be one from my favorite band. I swear they won't ALL be. Just to kick it off today.
Better Than Ezra is back. Remember them? Had the "wha-huh song" in 1995? The "running through the wet grass" song in 1997? The "j-j-juicy" song in 2006? Yup. They're back. They have a new album hitting stores May 12th titled "Paper Empire." Their 7th (yes, 7th) studio album. Plus they have a live CD/DVD, a Greatest Hits, and a bunch of demos floating out there too. They've been busy.
The first single from the album is called "Absolutely Still." I'll admit, it's nothing groundbreaking, but it's solid. It's a well-crafted pop-rock gem:
**Please note**- I'm not an anime fan, this was just the one video on YouTube with the song as the audio.
Want to download this one for free? The good people at Alternative Addiction have it available for a limited time, for a legit, free download. Check that out HERE!
Enjoy the tunage. Catch you guys tomorrow!

Introduction to TBMYNH
When I got laid off from my job at KBZI, a bunch of my listeners e-mailed and Facebook messaged me asking if I could put together a music blog since, well, KBZI didn't exist anymore, and that was a major conduit for people to hear new music in the area. Now in Fort Scott, Nevada, Arma, etc., other than some bleed from the other Joplin stations, and some local stations, radio just isn't cutting it.
So now, after two months of unemployment, I've finally got off my lazy ass and put together this bare-bones blog. I will TRY to update it daily with new music for you guys to check out. Some notes:
1.) NO. I will NOT send you MP3s of any music. If there is a link to a legit, free download of a song, I'll definitely pass that along.
2.) Sure, I WILL take song suggestions. Now that I'm unemployed, I don't have all the access to the new music sources that I used to. Let me know if you found something you want featured on here.
Uh... that's all I can think of for now.
This at first was intended for displaced BZI listeners who can't stand turning on the radio anymore... but feel free to spread the word to whomever. One of the reasons I got into radio was to introduce people to new music. Might as well keep that going, even if you didn't listen to BZI.
Rock on!
